Volvo, one of the most elite and luxury Swedish car maker announced the next version of their luxury sedan S80. New S80 will also include a cutting edge technology called ‘Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with Full Auto Brake’. This technology was also acknowledged as ‘Technology of the Year’ by AOL Autos in end of 2013 and hence now Volvo has come up with its implemented avatar in S80.
The car will now be available with two diesel engine options i.e. D4 and D5. D4 is 1984 cc motor exhibiting maximum power of 163 bhp @ 3500 RPM and maximum torque of 400 Nm @ 2750 RPM whereas D5 is a bigger engine of 2400 cc with 215 bhp @ 4000 RPM power output and 440 Nm @ 2750 RPM torque. The car will remain front wheel driven and both the engines will be mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Though mileage is not a big deal for buyers in this segment, S80 will still provide a whooping mileage of close to 16kmpl and 13.1kmpl with D4 and D5 respectively, which is surely a plus to all.
According to the experts, this car has the best music system. Talking of the new technology, Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with Full Auto Brake alerts drivers of impending collisions and if the driver does not respond to the alert, the system can stop the car to avert or minimize a major impact. It doesn’t guarantee accident avoidance but it will lessen impact severity and could completely avert an impact.
As far as pricing is considered, Volvo has set both the vehicles at a very competitive price point at Rs 41.35 lakhs for D4 and Rs 44.80 lakhs for D5 Volvo S80 (ex-showroom, Delhi).
We expected improvements on some other aspects like inclusions of more safety airbags system, since car has only two airbags, but for this pricing, it looks a very good package as a whole and this new technology compensates a lot on the safety part.
Along with this launch, Volvo India also launched its first exclusive lounge at the Terminal 3 domestic departure, Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi.
