Tata Nano is trying to change its image from the world’s cheapest car to a smart city car. Since its launch, Nano has had a lot of troubles for making its presence strong against entry level cars. Last year Tata introduced the updated version of Nano with CNG variant in e-max range of cars. Early this year the company launched power steering equipped Nano. The next version is Tata Nano Active twist AMT. Team AutoColumn spotted one of the test mules doing testing rounds around Pune.
This design was showcased in 2014 AutoExpo as Tata Nano Active Twist. There will be a few major changes in the car apart from exterior design, those are 5 speed AMT gearbox, rear openable hatch and a larger fuel tank. There are high chances that the new 800 cc 3 cylinder engine may find its way in this car, if not, the current 624cc engine will do the duty in Nano Active twist. Trying to take on competition, Nano will be the first car in entry level segment to get 5 speed AMT with engine that outputs 25kmpl.
Active twist variant in Nano with AMT will be the least priced AMT car in India and also the highest fuel economical car amongst competition. Recently launched Tata Nano Twist variant is top of the line and the highest priced variant of Nano is the e-max CNG variant. Expect the AMT equipped Nano to get a price tag close to R. 3 lakhs and launch by first quarter of 2015.
Tata Motors has improved new Nano twist with many changes that are not seen but major problems like engine noise in cabin, fit and finish of the parts are improving with coming variants. Tata Nano Active twist will get upmarket fit and finish of the parts and piano black center console to make car interiors feel premium. Targeted at young buyers, AMT variant of new Nano will surely attract women and old folks who are still young at heart.
Maruti Suzuki also announced that Alto and WagonR will get AMT gearbox by next year. The competition in entry level hatches will increase with AMT variants on Datsun Redi-Go, Renault A-entry and Hyundai EON.
