Bayerische Motoren Werke AG( BMW) Have started giving deliveries of their i8, BMW’s first hybrid plug-in sports car to their German customers. These steps were taken by BMW to keep image of the cutting edge Tesla Motors Inc.(TSLA) to shake the luxury automobile market. The $135,700 price tag car is a hybrid with fuel consumption of 2.1-0.0 liter per 100 km and CO2 emission of 49-0 g/km which was given to the first eight customers in presence of Roland Kruger, Head of Sales and Marketing, Germany as a part of ceremony. Selected guests were present at the ceremony featuring actor Thomas Kretschmann, Dr. Carsten Breitfeld, BMW project manager, Benoit Jacob, Head of Design BMW I and Dr. Helmut Schramm, Head of Production.
BMW i8 gets the laser light technology which was first seen on the Audi R8 LMX unveiled last month. BMW has actually implemented this technology of laser powered lights into its series production model. These LEDs powered by a laser uses 30 percent less energy in comparison to the Ultra powered LED lights and uses less space it is light weight too. These lights have high intensity with the light reaching up to 600 meters when kept on a high beam.
The most anticipated car which was seen driven by Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible is powered by a 1.5 liter turbocharged-three- cylinder engine and an electric motor driven by a Lithium-ion battery. With these two power plants the car manages to churn out a maximum power of 362bhp. The i8 is capable of reaching speed of 250kmph and can accelerate form 0-100kmph in 4.4 seconds. The car can drive for 37km on electric power alone and can give a mileage of 135 miles per gallon, Prius gives 51mpg. Body of the BMW i8 is made up of carbon fiber thus it is light in weight which adds to better performance.
This is BMW’s first plug-in hybrid vehicle and we hope to get more such cars which are eco friendly but having a performance of a supercar. BMW i8 will start deliveries in the main international markets in June.
