BMW does not want be left behind Mercedes Benz in the performance game and is coming up with two M models, the X5 M and the X6 M to counter the Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG and Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG, to go with M3, M4, M5 and the M6 GranCoupe from the M range.
The X5M and the X6M will be powered by the 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 engine, which also does duty on the M5 and M6 Gran Coupe. On the SUVs, this engine will produce 575 hp between 6,000-6,500 rpm and 750 Nm of torque between 2,200-5,000 rpm. Paired to an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, channelled through all wheels, the X5M and the X6M need only 4.2 seconds to hit 100 km/h. Their top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. The ground clearance has been reduced by 10mm when compared to the previous version.
Both these models will be brought as completely built units so expect it to be priced insanely. Both models come with Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start-Stop function and an ECO PRO mode along with self-levelling air suspension, Dynamic Drive and Dynamic Damper Control which has electronically adjustable dampers with three modes settings (Comfort, Sport and Sport+). The tyres use Pirelli P Zero rubber while Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres are optional as are the 21-inch wheels instead of the standard 20-inch ones.
The M SUVs will compete against the Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG, Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Range Rover Sport SVR . The SUV along with all other performance cars from BMW will be sold through the M studio, designed on the lines of AMG Performance Centres from Mercedes-Benz. BMW is looking to open 7 M Studios in cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Pune by end of 2016 along with the one currently operational in Mumbai.
