Safety comes first- BMW uncovered its latest addition to its lineup of luxury armored vehicles- the BMW X5 Security Plus. Previewed as a concept at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, the X5 Security Plus will officially make its debut at the 2014 Moscow Auto Expo next month.
Parked in a garage the BMW X5 Security Plus looks no different from the BMW X5, but to an armed-thief or a firearm-wielding criminal the X5 Security Plus is a luxury safehouse on wheels for its passengers inside, which is equipped, designed and tested to acclaim the VR6 protection level-meaning attacks from firearms such as an AK-47, AR-15, hand guns and blunt weapons will have no effect on the passengers’ health seated inside the X5’s cabin.
To comply with the VR6 protection level- on the outside the X5 Security Plus is built with high-strength and performance steel, which is the basic body capsule of the X5 Security Plus and the windows are replaced with bulletproof polycarbonate coated shatterproof glass. The body features sealed joints, which provide added protection in critical areas- between doors and frames, between side panels and pillars, preventing bullets or fragment penetration into the cabin.
On the inside the X5 Security Plus features and internal armored wall just behind the rear seat passengers for added safety. Other security features apart from the armored body include an iDrive operating system integrated with rear and front view cameras, a PA system, an intercom system- to communicate with people outside with rolling the windows down, run flat tires, automatic fire-suppression system, front LED-lights and siren systems.
With high protection and security features covering all possible angles, BMW has also paid careful attention providing the X5 Security Plus with better performance and driving stability, with a re-designed chassis, brakes and electronic management system, to cope with the X5’s extra weight and profile. The intelligent all-wheel drive xDrive50i system, is powered by BMW’s 4.4 liter, twinpower turbocharged V8 engine, which produces 450 HP of power and 650 Nm of torque, to tackle on-road and off-road terrains with ease.
BMW has not yet reveled the performance and price figures, but with its premium VR6 protection level, the BMW X5 Security Plus will join BMW’s 5-series and 7-series factory-armored offerings and also compete with the recently launched Mercedes S-class Guard. Personally, if you are a powerful and rich magnet that attracts armed maniacs, we recommend you to travel in the BMW X5 Security Plus.
