In India, MUV’s are increasingly becoming popular with their decent ride quality, large cabin space and a reasonable mileage. Chevrolet plans to capitalize on this new market trend with the upcoming launch of the Chevrolet Spin, which is scheduled to arrive in 2016. Chevrolet plans to sell the Spin for personal use unlike the Tavera and Enjoy.
From the outside, the biggest strength of the Spin are not its looks, since it certainly looks out of proportion with its big flared wheel arches and tiny wheels, its overly large head lights and its massive ground clearance. The Spin is larger than the Enjoy and is 4.36 m long, 1.735 m wide and 1.656 m high. Ground clearance is 157 mm which should be adequate for Indian roads. Under the skin, the Beat and Spin share the same chassis platform, which means that certain components like the power train, interior materials and gearbox might be common. As for the engine, the Spin has a 1.2 litre petrol, 1.5 and a 1.8 litre engine all of which are coupled with a 6-Speed Gear box.
Compared to its rivals, the Spin fits in between the Ertiga and the Mobilio, with the Mobilio being only slightly larger. The Spin gives 23 kmpl , much higher with the Ertiga giving 16 kmpl but almost the same to the Mobilio which gives 24.5 kmpl. In terms of safety, all the cars have front airbags, EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution) and ABS as standard. The Spin and the Mobilio have special body structures, while the Ertiga has a reinforced body with the use of high tensile steel. As for the engines, the Spin gives 75 bhp and 190 Nm of torque from the diesel unit and 109 bhp and 141 Nm of torque from the petrol units. The petrol version of the Ertiga has just 95 bhp and 130 Nm of torque, while the diesel has 90 bhp and 200 Nm of torque. The Mobilio has 119 bhp and 145 Nm of torque coming out from petrol units with the diesel giving 100 bhp and 200 Nm of torque. As of March, the Spin has been undergoing testing and will be launched next year, while the Ertiga and the Mobilio are already on sale. Next to its rivals, the Spin is better than the Ertiga in almost all parameters, except that Maruti-Suzuki has an impeccable record of reliability and service and is one factor that Chevrolet is yet to achieve in this country. The Spin must be priced under the Mobilio, since has the best specs of these three cars.
