The no frills SUV, Dacia Duster, has been spotted in a pick-up avatar.
The car appears to be a production model prototype and not just a converted one. The images were uploaded to Dacia Oltcit Aro Facebook page. Dacia has tasted success with the Duster which it longed for quite a while and this move will only help it to make it better.
The Dacia Duster pick-up loses on the rear doors to make way for the loading area. The rear tail-gate will be a drop down one for easy loading and offloading. A metal cage will provide safety to the rear windshield from the loading bay.
The engine options will remain unchanged, so it will have a 1.6 litre 105 ps motor and a 1.2 litre turbocharged 125 ps engine. On the diesel side, the 1.5 litre dCi engine with power outputs of 90 ps and 105 ps will continue. The company will also offer AWD layout as an option to be selected with a particular engine.
Dacia is a budget brand and has tied up with Renault and Nissan in many markets. Renault sells the Duster in many markets including India, while Nissan does the same thing. Nissan has worked on the car body to make it look different and sells it as the Terrano in India and other markets.
Both of these companies will however not launch the car in India since Indians tend to look at pick-ups as utilitarian vehicles. This has a negative effect on the brand value and these companies are just getting their foothold in the country, they cannot afford to put one step wrong.
The car will be showcased at the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October of this year.
