Honda revealed the all-new, 2018 Amaze compact sedan at the 2018 Auto Expo. The car will be launched in India in a couple of months. The 2018 Amaze uses an all-new platform called 2UA, which will also be used to build a compact SUV for India. Like the Amaze, the compact SUV will have a sub-4 meter length. The new compact SUV is expected to compete with the Maruti Vitara Brezza, India’s best selling sub-4 meter SUV. In India, Honda has decided to focus on the SUV segment as it’s one of the fastest growing segments.
Yoichiro Ueno, the CEO of Honda Cars India Limited, confirmed this development with the following comments,
We prefer the SUV space to small cars. The SUV is a growing segment in India, it offers more potential than a small car in the current context. We are studying multiple SUV options on the new Amaze platform.
Honda is expected to launch two new SUVs in India, one this year and the other next year. The all-new, 4th generation CR-V luxury SUV will be launched this year. It was showcased at the Auto Expo. The CR-V will get a 7 seat layout, petrol and diesel engines, automatic and manual gearboxes, and also front wheel drive and all wheel drive options. Prices are expected to start from Rs. 25 lakhs, making the new CR-V a Toyota Fortuner rival.
The next Honda SUV launch will happen in 2019, when the company brings in the HR-V. The HR-V is a 5 seat SUV that will compete with the Jeep Compass in India. Expect pricing to range between 15-20 lakhs, and both petrol and diesel engine options will be available. The sub-4 meter Honda Amaze platform-based compact SUV is likely to be launched only in 2020 or beyond. It is expected to have a sub-7 lakh starting price tag when launched here.
