The Elite i20, which is nothing but the latest generation of the popular Korean supermini, seems to have hit the right chord with the Indian car buying lot. While the Elite i20 could soon become a force to reckon with in our car market’s highly competitive B+ segment. Hyundai has already started readying itself to come up with a pseudo-crossover that will become a Fiat Avventura adversary. Based on the latest hatchback from the Korean auto giant, the upcoming model has been nicknamed as the Hyundai Elite Cross and it has already started undergoing road-tests around Hyundai India’s Chennai facility. According to a report by The Hindu Business Line, Young Jin Ahn, Chief Coordinator, Sales & Marketing Division, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has confirmed that the Hyundai Elite i20 Cross launch would happen in early 2015.

The upcoming Elite i20 Cross will spearhead Hyundai India’s charge in the fast growing psuedo-crossover segment, which currently involves the likes of Volkswagen Cross Polo, Fiat Avventura and the Toyota Etios Cross. The launch of the Elite i20 Cross is expected to be followed by the introduction of the ix25, which will be a full-fledged compact SUV and would lock horns with the likes of the highly successful Ford EcoSport.

As must be quite obvious to you, the upcoming car would look much like an Elite i20 on stilts, which means it would have a higher ground clearance and probably a more aggressive stance. Also, it is very likely to get roof rails, additional plastic cladding and faux skid plates. The rest of the car would look much like its hatchback sibling and would benefit from some dramatic visual features such as blackened C-Pillars, stylish headlamps with DRLs and sleek taillamps.

The engine options are likely to remain the same, which means the Elite i20 Cross will get a 1.2-litre, normally aspirated petrol engine along with a 1.4-litre, turbocharged diesel motor. Transmissions too will be carried over and the car isn’t likely to benefit from the introduction of an auto ‘box.
