Hyundai has been working on a compact sedan for a while now. While there has been much speculation in this regard, we can now confirm that a compact sedan has indeed now emerged from the Hyundai stables. Based on the Hyundai Grand i10 platform the sedan variant will enable Hyundai to attempt breaking into the highly sensitive compact sedan market segment currently dominated by Honda, Maruti Suzuki & Tata Motors.
First previewed on Indian Autos Blog, the sedan variant shown in the pictures seems to be a base model judging by the rather spartan & plain-jane interiors. Design wise the model shares a lot with the Grand i10 judging by the front & side views. The only change commences from the C- Pillar onwards where a slightly stubby looking boot has been added on. Internals remain virtually unchanged from the hatchback variant. We do expect some internal & external cosmetic changes to help distinguish the sedan from the hatchback though.
We expect the sedan to sport a similar mill as the hatchback viz. the 1.2 liter Kappa2 petrol engine. A diesel variant is also expected to be on offer from launch & it may be powered either by the 1.1 liter U2 3 pot diesel found on the Grand i10 or Hyundai may even up the ante a bit by using the 1.4 liter 4 pot diesel from the i20 since both engines are eligible for excise duty benefits.
This upcoming model can definitely make Hyundai’s presence felt in the entry level compact sedan market and coming days ahead will reveal how things develop further. We would not be surprised if Auto Expo 2014 sees either a launch or a preview of this model. Watch this space for more.
