We told you a while ago in December 2013 that Mercedes-Benz GLK class will be coming to India in 2016. This was confirmed by Mr. Eberhard Kern in January 2014. India bout 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLK class spotted in Dubai by IAB reader, Mr. Nithin Kumar. Next generation GLK class will come to India via CKD route and will be launched in first quarter of 2016. Mercedes-Benz GLK competes with Audi Q3, BMW X3 and Volvo XC60 internationally. Current product from Mercedes-Benz to compete such rivals is the ML Class.
Next generation GLK Class will be on Mercedes-Benz’s MRA platform. The program name for this vehicle is W253 and it will be rear wheel drive as MRA is rear wheel drive architecture and MFA is front wheel drive architecture like the one seen on Mercedes-Benz A Class. Both the platforms are designed to work within Mercedes’ developing modular systems. This system groups around sets of 90 components into modules such as front and rear suspension, electric architectures, full power-train and many other parts which are under the hood and body. Next generation 2014 C-Class (W205), 2015 M class (W116) will also feature MRA Mid-Size platform.
Current GLK Class is not sold in right hand drive markets because of its drive-shaft position for front wheels of 4WD, which doesn’t give space for right side footwell. But the next-generation GLK model will be built for both left and right hand drive markets because of feasibility of MRA platform. The company will position this luxury compact SUV against Audi Q5 and BMW X3 and entry level premium compact SUVs like Evoque.
In few months Mercedes-Benz will launch GLA crossover in India, the company has already started accepting bookings of the car. Mercedes-Benz CLA sedan and CLA45 AMG are the two products to be launched in pipeline for the coming months. We also expect next generation 2014 C Class (W205) to be launched before the end of this year.
