Expect the Indian shores to wake up to the distinctive sound of a throbbing Indian iron lump come January 2014. Before you think any further, let us stop you. We are talking about Indian Motorcycles of the US of A and they are coming to India in January 2014.
Indian Motorcycles has had a long and rich history intertwined with the history of the motorcycle as we know it today. Setup in 1897 in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA by George Hendee, Indian was originally called the Hendee Manufacturing Company until 1928. The first Indian motorcycle was manufactured in 1901 under the name Indian Single.
From then until 1953 the company enjoyed success after success with Indian motorcycles covering themselves in racing glory & commercial success. 1953 was also the year when the company went bankrupt and was forced to shut down operations. Post 1953 till 2011 when Polaris acquired it the marque was embroiled in a lot of controversy & legal wrangles with a number of people staking their claim on the marque.
Today, under the Polaris umbrella, Indian currently has 3 offerings – the Chief Classic, the Chief Vintage & the Chieftain. All three models currently share the ‘Thunder Stroke 111’ engine rated at 1819 cc & displacing 161 Nm of torque all of which is transferred to the rear wheel via a 6 speed box.
With Harley Davidson having established a significant presence across India & Triumph just on the verge of doing so, Polaris definitely could not afford not being in the race. While we are not completely sure as to what specific plans Polaris has for the Indian ‘Indian’, we are sure it will definitely make 2014 an interesting year to look forward to.
