Mahindra and Mahindra has annouced plans for building hybrid SUVs. The lessons learnt from Mahindra Reva will be used to develop all-new full scale Hybrid SUVs. The Indian utility vehicle maker did not announce the time frame but expect a time span of around 2 years to develop full Hybrid SUV from concepts. Mahindra and Mahindra may showcase the hybrid SUV concepts in 2014 Auto Expo.
Indian government is working on proposals of hybrid systems that will improve fuel efficiency by 20-30%. One of them is hybrid vehicles. Hybrid vehicles use both electric drive and conventional engine to propel vehicle thereby increasing kilometers per liter and reducing CO2 emissions per liter. Mahindra is already using ‘Micro Hybrid’ systems in its various models like Bolero, Scorpio. Micro Hybrid is basically a start stop system that saves fuel in stop and go traffic.
In addition to Mahindra Reva’s technology and ‘Micro Hybrid’, Mahindra cleared the air by revealing the hybrid vehicles will have manual transmission rather than automatic transmission found in other hybrids. The gearbox will be developed by German tier 1 supplier ZF engineering. The Hybrid system on SUVs will activate electric drive when there will be a stop-and-go traffic and vehicle speed is set to a certain limit; as soon as speed crosses its marked limit, system will switch on conventional engine drive.
Mahindra also announced that the company will source lithium ion batteries from Samsung and a company official has revealed that this technology will be deployed in all models in due course of time. Mahindra might showcase concepts of Scorpio Hybrid and XUV Hybrid in 2014 Auto expo. Apart from these Hybrid SUVs, Scorpio facelift and a compact SUV are two highlights from Mahindra for 5th Feb,2014. Are you listening TATA ?
