According to Autocar, Mahindra TUV3OO, the compact SUV from homegrown automaker Mahindra has received over 12,000 and surprisingly, over half of them are for the automatic variants. It took less than two months to rack up such numbers since the booking started on September 10.
The TUV 300 AMT is available in two variants, T6+ and T8+ priced at Rs 8.52 lakh and 9.12 lakh respectively whereas the base variant is substantially cheaper at Rs. 6.90 lakh. Pawan Goenka, executive director, Mahindra & Mahindra said, “We didn’t anticipate such high demand for AMT. In fact, one of the reasons why there is a gap between demand and supply is because our AMT production capacity is limited.”
The company has a production capacity of 5,000 units monthly. However, the company does not have to manufacture AMT’s in such high numbers which have been developed in-house with European company Ricardo, specializing in transmission systems. The company currently intends on producing 5,000 units a month, and could think of increasing the capacity if they see a substantial surge in demand.
Currently, Mahindra TUV 3OO is the only car in the segment with an optional AMT and is reaping the rewards of being first. The overall length is 3995mm, the width of this vehicle is 1835mm with a height of 1839mm and has an impressive ground clearance of 191mm. It has 1.5-litre (1493cc) three-cylinder unit, that pumps out 84PS of power and generates 230Nm of torque. This three-pot motor is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
It comes in three variants, T4, T6 and T8, and has features like two airbags, ABS, EBD, rear parking sensors, all four power windows, electrically adjustable ORVMs, rear wiper with defogger, follow me home headlamps, front fog lamps. The automatic transmission options are available in the T6+ and T8+ trims. The SUV competes with Ford Ecosport, Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano and the Hyundai Creta.
