Mahindra and Mahindra, India’s largest utility vehicle manufacturer is trying its luck in the segment of quadricycles. The first concept of quadricycle, RE60 was showcased by Bajaj at 2012 Auto Expo and we have seen many test mules of the vehicle doing testing rounds around Pune and Bajaj plant in Chakan.
In early 2013, major Automotive OEMs opposed this concept of quadricycles by giving a list of inputs that showed how its not safe on Indian roads. But as road trasport and highway ministry approved with a green flag to this catagory of vehicles, the same giants have actually started development of quadricycles. With Mahindra and Mahindra readying up it’s quadricycle, Bajaj wont be the only one in this segment. Mr. Pravin Shah, chief executive, automotive, Mahindra & Mahindra, said to ET,
“M&M is surely looking at the space, we have never objected to that segment.
We keep investing in anticipation of new regulations, new segments and new
It’s not only Mahindra that is in race to get competitive product to RE60, Tata Motors also did not deny of considering possibility of development of such type of vehicle on ACE platform.
With this class of vehicles on the road, to ensure safety in India, it is allowed only inside cities as transport vehicle and not as personal vehicle. Quadricycle is a cheaper alternative to four wheelers and better and safer than tin boxed autorickshaws. According to Indian specificiations of Quadricycles, the vehicle meant for carrying passengers has to be 450 kgs and for goods carrying should be 550kgs. Overall length for passenger carrier version of quadricycle should limit to 3 meter and for goods carrier version it should limit to 3.7 meter.
The quadricycle from Bajaj is also going under CNG version testing. Mahindra and Mahindra is getting a 216cc engine with maximum power of 20bhp and top speed of 70kmph. A fuel economy of 30-35kmpl is expected from this motor.
Quadricycles are already famous in European market and it is basically a four wheeler with less power and much less maximum speed. More than 3 lakh quadricycles are running in Europe. In US it is also known as separte catagory of low-speed vehicle since 1998. Renaut Twinzy, Piaggio Quadro and Polaris Axiam are few of them.
