Mercedes Benz India has launched the smaller variant of its flagship saloon, the S-Class, today. 2014 Mercedes-Benz S350 CDI was launched at the Mercedes factory (AKA. Center of Exellence) in Pune with a price tag of INR 1.07 crore (ex- showroom Pune).
The W222 S-Class 350 CDI is powered by a 3 litre V6 engine and is mated to Mercedes` 7G-tronic automatic gearbox. The engine develops 190 kw of power at 3600 rpm and a massive 620 Nm of torque between 1600 and 2400 rpm. The car can reach a topspeed of 250 kmph with the 0-100 coming in 6.8 seconds.
The car has the same chassis as its bigger sibling, the S500, but due to the smaller engine block, the S350 weighs 100 kg less than the S500. The S350 gets AIRMATIC suspension for a smooth ride, 8 airbags and PRESAFE for safety.
Inside you will get a 590 watt Burmseter sound system with 24 speakers, two 10 inch display screens and a DVD player with wireless headphones. You can enjoy all of this while having your body massaged by the car seats, the control of which is ofcourse, in your hands. The rear seat console has the rear seat entertainment system with complete audio and video controls.
The other BIG news is that the company will be manufacturing the body of the S350 at their Chakan plant in Pune. The Chakan Plant is also the only plant outside of the US to produce locally assembled GL class.
The company`s plant is Chakan is also big on saving the environment. The roof of the facility has been converted to produce energy using 100 kW Solar panels. This will help the company to save 150000 kW of energy every year.
The company has already launched 5 of the 10 products it will launch this year in India. They include : the S-Class petrol (S500), C-Class Grand edition, ML-Class AMG, GL-Class AMG and now the S-Class diesel. Mercedes is going all out to reclaim its top spot in the luxury market in India.
The company has also designed a program for Chauffeurs for th S-Class. The participants will undergo training for etiquette, safety and personality development. They will also be taught about all the features of the car. This is the first time any such program has been carried out by a company in India.
The S350 will compete against the Audi A8L, the BMW 7-Series and the Jaguar XJL. The Audi has two diesel engines and the smaller one of the two produces 254 bhp and the 7 Series has a 258 bhp engine.
The company has also announced 3 AMG centers in India at Banglore, Delhi and Mumbai. Mercedes is very keen to make the AMG brand more well known and appealing in the country. The number of showrooms will rise by 7 this year. To make the most of the reviving economy, the annual production capacity will be doubled this year. Presently it is 10,000 cars/ year. This will be done by adding flexibility to the production lines so as to produce different cars at the same time.
