The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered the Delhi Government to stop using diesel vehicles. No Government official should be seen moving around in a diesel vehicle. NGT has ordered the Government to not buy any new diesel vehicles.
No new diesel vehicle should be registered in Delhi after this. Diesel vehicles which are more than 10 years old should be completely phased out. The vehicles older than 10 years should not be re registered in Delhi. These guildelines imply to both the Center and State Government.
According to NP Singh, Lawyer, Delhi Government, the law will only be applicable to the Central and State Governments. Private owners will not be affected by this law from the Tribunal.
The Delhi government has been in the news lately due to the odd even rule which we have discussed a couple of times now. Mumbai is also expected to follow the rule if it succeeds in Delhi. Now, why is the Delhi government doing this? It is not like people are dying due to pollution. If that is what you think, you are WRONG.
The air pollution in Delhi is a very serious matter. The air poluion level in the capital reached a record high this Diwali. It was around 40% above the limit subscribed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Does not sound that horrifying right? But it is.
The limit by WHO is the maximum pollution a human body can go through. The organs and the body start getting affected after this. So, breathing in Delhi causes the same amount of damage that smoking a pack of cigarette cause. Delhi is not the only Indian city facing the problem of air pollution. 13 out of 20 most polluted cities in world are from India, says WHO.
