Last fiscal Fiats sales figures touched four digits milestone for the first time in India. Four digit sales figures are encouraging to any manufacturer, which has made Fiat plan big launches for India. After Cross Etios, Fabia scout and Cross Polo, the Italian automotive giant Fiat is planning to crossbreed its famous Hatch Punto, which will be a pumped up look-a-like crossover version of Punto and will be called “Punto Avventure” and not Adventure. ‘Adventure’ in Italian is avventure.
Fiat has already showcased MPV and SUV version of 500, they have no plans of getting them to India soon. Test mules of Punto Avventure have been spotted near Pune. New Punto Avventure will be mechanically same as Punto hatch, except it will carry all new front and rear muscular bumpers for rugged look. Spare wheel will be placed on rear boot as in Ecosport, which will carry an “Avventure” badge and roofrails to add tall SUV look. Rest metal body panels and lights remain the same.
Punto Avventure will be powered by Fiat’s well proven 1.3-litre 4-cylinder common rail MultiJet diesel engine mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The motor will churn out a maximum power output of 90bhp and 200Nm of torque. Though it will be called an adventure vehicle it will remain FWD and may see some boost in ground clearance.
Punto Avventure will be a lakh rupees dearer than Punto, which is priced 5.04 to 7.38 lakh in India. There are chances of Fiat launching Punto Adventure Crossover/Compact SUV in the coming AutoExpo.
With entry of Duster and Ecosport, all leading automotive manufacturers are trying their luck in C segment though Punto Adventure is not an actual Compact SUV. Talking about such crossovers they have never been successful in India and we have already seen failed products like Fabia scout and Cross Polo.
Fiat has already played this game with Palio Adventure which was a disaster. It will be interesting to see what future does Punto Avventure has. So will you pay a lakh rupees extra for a wanna-be SUV or go for the actual one.
