The BMW X1, which is the entry-level ‘X’ model in the Bavarian car maker’s product portfolio, has soldiered on for almost half a decade now. At the fag-end of its career, the X1 is looking at a complete model replacement that should be out by mid-2015. The next generation of the BMW X1 will be based on the BMW Group’s front-wheel drive architecture and the upcoming model is sure to look far more futuristic. Here are a set of new 2016 BMW X1 images that drop a few clues about the 2016 X1’s exterior body design.
These 2016 BMW X1 images that you see on this page here have been found published on French website Auto Plus and from what these pictures seem to suggest, the next generation X1 will boast of a X3-like stance and is likely to have grown in size. Like we said earlier, the all-new X1 will be underpinned by the group’s UKL platform. This front-wheel drive platform can be currently found underpinning latest generation of MINI models and the 2 Series Active Tourer. While the introduction of the UKL platform to X1 would mean that the next-gen X1s will have a front-wheel drive configuration by default, the car-maker is sure to also introduce high end ‘xDrive’ all-wheel drive models.
As you might have guessed, the 2016 X1 will be richer on the features front and we expect some of the features on the new generation X3 to trickle down its baby sibling. Also, slightly larger dimensions, along with the absence of the transmission tunnel, should translate to an airier interior. There are good chances that also on the cards is a seven-seat variant that will be slotted just below the X3.
Mechanically, the X1 could get the MINI-sourced 1.5-litre three cylinder petrol engine for its base variants. The higher variants however, would benefit from 2.0-litre inline-4 petrol and diesel motors.
The new 2016 BMW X1 India launch is expected to happen in early 2016. In India, the BMW X1 locks horns with the Audi Q3 and the recently launched Mercedes GLA Class.
