Come January 2014, Suzuki Motorcycle plans to launch the much awaited naked street bike, the Suzuki GW250 in India. The bike is also known as Suzuki Inazuma 250. The GW250 is nick-named the Baby-King and Mini-B-King in reference to it being styled after the B-King’s design.
The GW 250 (Inazuma 250) is powered by a 248cc parallel twin liquid cooled motor that produces 26bhp and 22Nm of torque mated to 6 speed gearbox. The power and torque figures are not so impressive but hold on, the company claims that Suzuki GW250 delivers a real good fuel economy. The GW250 is a fairly heavy 250cc class bike, yet it is small and light enough that it is easy to move it about.
The 250cc segment in India is soon becoming a hot market for two wheeler manufacturers and there are plenty of good and strong players like KTM Duke 200, Honda CBR 250 and the pricey Kawasaki Ninja 300R. The pricing of premium motorcycles is crucial in India and the proof of pricing making or breaking a product is reflected by the poor sales of the Ninja 300 due to the bike’s high pricing.
On the other hand, the hot selling KTM Duke 200’s major advantage is its sharp pricing. The company plans to import the GW250 through the completely-knocked-down (CKD) kit route and the bike will be assembled at SMIL’s Gurgaon plant. It will be interesting to see how Suzuki will price this bike as the fully localised Mahindra Mojo 300 and full faired version of the Pulsar 200 NS are also in the final stages of homologation, and due for launch in the first quarter of 2014.
Suzuki Motorcycle India’s Gurgaon facility has a current yearly production capacity of 500,000 units and Suzuki Motorcycles India sells Access 125 and Swish 125 scooters and, 110cc (Hayate), 125cc (Slingshot) commuters and 150cc (GS150R). The company plans to expand product portfolio by launching one more commuter motorcycle and one scooter in Jan 2014.
