Tata Motors unveiled its hottest SUV concept ever – the H5X. Based on the Land Rover LS550 platform that also underpins the Discovery Sport, the H5X is a 5 seat concept SUV that will soon go into production. The concept version looks stunning, unlike anything Tata Motors has shown before.
It looks quite futuristic, and is based on Tata’s Impact 2.0 design philosophy. From the rear though, the Discovery Sport’s lines are unmistakable. If Tata Motors does put this concept into production without toning down the design by too much, it’s sure to be a real head turner.
The interiors of the H5X are a mix of minimal and classy touches. There’s a clean looking dashboard that gets wood inserts, something that the production version is unlikely to get. There’s a touchscreen infotainment unit dominating the center console that flows seamlessly from the dashboard.
The rear shows two seats and a prominent arm-rest. However, the production version is expected to see a more conventional single seat bench that will have enough room for three adults. Many touches on the interiors of the H5X are expected to be similar to that of the Nexon.
Mechanically, the H5X will use a 2 liter turbocharged diesel engine borrowed from the Jeep Compass, but in a lower 140 Bhp-320 Nm state of tune. 6 speed manual and 9 speed automatic gearbox options are likely. While a front wheel drive layout will be standard on the lower trims, Tata is also likely to offer a four wheel drive system on the higher trims.
The production version of this SUV will be priced at under Rs. 10 lakhs, in the compact SUV segment that also has vehicles such as the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki S-Cross, Renault Duster and the Nissan Terrano. The H5X will go into production in early 2019. On-road testing has already begun in full swing.
