The much awaited BMW G310R is here. The G310R will be manufactured in India at the Bengaluru plant of TVS motors. The G310R will be the first product after BMW joined hands with TVS in 2013. BMW Motorrad had promised a bike co developed with TVS motors in 2 years after the partnership i.e 2015 and yes, they are on time. The G310R has been showcased by BMW and will most probably be launched at the Milan show. The bike is BMW’s first roadster under 500 cc and is aimed to achieve the company’s target of selling 2 lakh units a year. This is the first time BMW is manufacturing its bike outside Germany and that is no where else but in India! That is the kind of trust BMW has in India. However the bike is designed in Munich, Germany.
The G310R has an all new 310 cc single cylinder, DOHC engine that is claimed to produce 34 HP at 9,500 RPM and 28 NM of torque at 7,500 RPM. Though the bike is small but it gets the same treatment, the elder brother like the S100R and R1200R enjoys at BMW. The angular side panels identical to the S1000R and the headlamp with a small shroud that has a hint of R1200R shows the roots of the bike. The cylinder head is rotated at 180 degrees and the cylinder is canted backwards, which provides room for fuel and air mixture and provides a lower center gravity for a longer swingarm and therefore stable handling. The bike also has a rigid tubular steel frame and upside down forks in the front and long swinging arm with a spring strut for better responsiveness and handling. It has lightweight but strong 5 spoke 17 inch wheels wrapped by 110/70 R 17 at front and 150/60 R 17 at rear. The instrument cluster has a large LCD screen which displays enough information about the ride with excellent clarity. The bike has 2 channel ABS as standard for the European markets. The braking is done by a 4 piston 300 mm disc brake on the front wheel and a 2 piston 240 mm disc brake at rear.
The bike will be launched in India soon after its global debut. It will compete with the very popular KTM Duke 390 and Kawasaki Z250 and will be priced accordingly. India will be a hub for exporting the bike world-wide. According to reports the BMW G310R will be sold by the name of TVS Motor Company in the Asian market.
