Need of shifting gears:

Basically, you need to shift gears, because while driving you are gaining more and more speed. If you want to gain more speed, you need to make sure you are on the required gear. The first gear happens to be the biggest. Hence, it offers you the least speed but produces the maximum torque out of all the gears. Due to the highest torque offered, this gear helps us capture the pickup speed. After the first gear, second gear will help you with more speed but less torque.

So as you gain more momentum and speed, you will need higher gear which will offer higher speeds & less torque. Hence while halting or on signals, if you are in the second or in the third gear then your vehicle doesn’t offer you the same launch as it does while in first gear. Greater the speed, lesser the torque is required to attain higher speeds.

Shifting gears is as involuntary action as breathing for a professional driver. If you are confused due to a difference of opinions about shifting gears, then make sure this is the pattern you can follow for changing of gears.
While regular driving you should change your gears every time your RPM meter hits the 3500 or 4000 mark. Even though you don’t see the RPM meter or if it’s not functional, then you can guess that through the revving sound coming from the engine compartment. 3000 to 4000 RPM might me the preferable mark for changing of gears in the city.

If you are on highways and if you want to catch up with someone or need to get somewhere quickly, then you might rev the vehicle up to 5000 or 6000 RPM’s and then launch the next gear. This will help you attain higher speeds in no time. Make sure you don’t do this on crowded streets or on city roads, your vehicle might get out of control. Over revving of your vehicle can result in damaging the engine and early wearing of clutch plates . Hence try and avoid unnecessary revving of vehicle.
