The all-new Maruti Swift is going great guns even before launch. Maruti dealers around India started officially accepting pre-bookings for the new car a couple of weeks ago, and the Swift has already crossed the 30,000 bookings mark. It will be launched on the 7th of February at the 2018 Indian Auto Expo. The Swift will be India’s biggest car launch at the Auto Expo. The new car is expected to be priced slightly higher than the older version. We expect prices to start from Rs. 5.1 lakhs, which is a 20,000 rupee premium over the outgoing model.
Confirming the huge booking numbers even before the actual launch and price announcement, Kenichi Ayukawa, the MD of Maruti Suzuki India Limited said that a clear picture of demand will emerge after the price announcement,
We have received around 30,000 bookings till now, but will see the real numbers when we announce the price. As we have not announced the price we can’t have a say on number of bookings as some people might cancel the bookings after the real prices are announced.
Maruti will produce the Swift at its new, Hansalpur factory in Gujarat. The Baleno hatchback, which was being produced at Gujarat, will be moved to Maruti’s Manesar factory to accommodate the new Swift. The Gujarat factory has a capacity to manufacture 250,000 cars each year, and this means that Maruti will be capable of putting about 20,000 units of the new Swift in dealer stockyards each month. This should be enough to keep waiting periods to less than 2 months.
The new Swift will be available with petrol and diesel engine options. Both manual and AMT options will be offered as gearbox options, on both the petrol and diesel engines. The car is based on a light-weight HEARTECT platform, which has reduced the weight of the new car by about 80 kilograms. The new car will be faster and more fuel efficient than the outgoing version. It will also have more space on the inside, thanks to the 20 mm increase in wheelbase. Boot space has also increased by 50 liter.
