Audi is making hay while the sun shines. It gained the number 1 spot in the Indian market this year ahead of Mercedes and BMW and now it plans to stay ahead with the launch of the A3 next month. According to reports, production of the Audi A3 has already begun at sister company Skoda’s Aurangabad plant. Both, Audi and Skoda are owned by VW.
Audi Board Member, Hubert Waltl said,”The local production of the Audi A3 Sedan in India is in continuation of our growth strategy and consistent focus on the Indian market.” The A3 is the first car from the german manufacturer which has been produced in India before launch. Earlier Audi imported various models including the A4, A6, Q3, Q5 and Q7 as CBUs but now all of these are produced in India.
Annual capacity of the plant is 14,000 units with only one shift daily. The number is more than the total number of cars Audi sold last year, which stands at 10,002. It shows what the Audi has riding on the A3 as well as how confident it is about the car.
The Audi A3 will be offered with both; petrol (180PS 1.8 TFSI) and diesel (143PS) engines. Both will be mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox to power the front wheels. Quattro will be given a miss.
Audi India Head Joe King said “We believe that the launch of this car would see us further consolidating our market share and strengthen our leadership position”. The company claims to have created a new segment all-together with the A3 which will attract a lot of new and young buyers, which will make the Audi brand penetrate into the minds of Indian people. The entry price for the Audi brand will still remain with the Q3.
The A3 won the prestigious World Car Of The Year 2014 award in April beating 23 other contenders. This also helped Audi retain the tag of being the brand with the most number of WCOTY awards.
