As crude oil prices fall lowest since spring of 2009, In another world auto-manufacturers are developing new technologies to make less and less use of fuel. BMW showcased the hybrid supercar i-8 and the car is expected soon in the Indian market. The showcased happened in Auto Expo 2014 and after almost a year they are planning to launch the car around February 2015. The car has been spotted at the local dealer. This car is a part of BMW’s ‘Project i’ and is being marketed with a new brandname ‘BMW I’.
The initial introduction of BMW i-8 was BMW Concept Vision Efficient Dynamics, which is a plug-in hybrid sports car. It was introduced as turbo diesel car in Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009. The production version of BMWi-8 was presented the 2013 in Frankfurt Motor Show. It was launched In Germany in June 2014. Just after that it was launched in U.S. in August 2014.
The technical specifications of BMW i-8 are very interesting as the car is powered by 1.5 litter 3 pot turbocharged petrol mill cranking out 231PS of power and 320Nm of torque. The electric motor of the car generates 131PS and 250Nm of torque taking the total output to 362PS and 570Nm. Considering the official BMW figures, the BMW i-8 speeds up in just 4.4 seconds has an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph. It Runs on battery power and achieves the top speed of 120 km/h with a maximum range of 35 kilometres. The BMW i-8 makes heavy usage of carbon fiber for the construction of the vehicle and makes the supercar tip the scale at a mere 1490kg even though it carries a large battery pack and the electric motor.
Being a hybrid sports car it saves fuel and emits lesser amount of carbon di-oxide. To compete with this car we have 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder, 2014 Audi R8, 2014 BMW 6 Series, 2-14 Tesla Model S and 2014 Porsche 911. Initially i-8 will hit Indian shores via the CBU route and is expected to price around INR 1.8-2 Crore and limited units will be sold here due to the expensive demand globally. The car gives mileage 40 Kmpl which is a good news for Indian buyers.
