BMW showed off the M2, smallest of all the performance cars from the M range and added that it’s very driver focussed and the one to give you the thrill of driving. The car will be launched at Detroit Motor Show in January 2016. The news has come that the company has already started the production of the smallest ‘M’ at its plant in Leipzig in Germany.
BMW M2 can be mixed on the production line with the pedestrian variants of BMW 2 Series Coupe and Convertible, as well as BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and BMW 1 Series five-door model. 750 cars per day can be produced per day at the Leipzig plant, and more than 100 BMW i3 and 20 BMW i8. The BMW M2 Coupe will account only for a small percentage.
BMW M2 Coupe gets a 3.0-liter twin scroll turbocharged six-cylinder engine offering 370 PS power at 6,500 rpm and 465 Nm peak torque at 1,400-5,560 rpm. With a boost function, torque figure is increased by 35Nm to a massive 500 Nm between 1,450-4,750 rpm. The power is fed to the wheels through a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. 0-100 km/h comes up in 4.3 seconds and tops out at an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
The M2 is aggressive on the looks considering the BMW standards and sits on wide Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires of 245/35 ZR 19 in front and 265/35 ZR 19 at the rear.
M2 comes with a host of safety features like Collision alert, pedestrian and lane depart warning systems along with rearview camera, navigation and parking sensors which will form the on-board safety features while an optional M lap timer will keep records of speed, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, steering angles, gear and fuel consumption. The longitudinal and lateral acceleration, steering angles would be fun to check out while pounding the car on the track!!
The company will start selling it in Germany by April 2016 and we could see it in India by the festive season of 2016.
