Mercedes- Benz has launched the much awaited new C-Class diesel in Pune. The launch was scheduled at the Mercedes-Benz Chakan factory. Eberhard Kern, managing director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz and Piyush Arora, Executive Director, Operations, Mercedes-Benz India were present for the launch. Mercedes-Benz launched the new C 220 CDI Avantgarde and the new C 200 Avantgarde (CKD) at the centre of Excellence in Pune.
Mercedes has commenced the local production of the C 200 Avantgarde petrol variant however the C 220 diesel will be imported as a completely built unit. The C 220 will be available in two variants; C 220 CDI Style and C 220 CDI Avantgarde. These launches have fulfilled Mercedes claim to provide the best and most comprehensive products in the Indian market.
The new C-Class has created a new benchmark in this particular segment. It has been acclaimed of many awards in India and is becoming to be known as the favorite car amongst the critics. Mercedes have taken special efforts to make the new C-Class look more modern and perform better as well. It comes with high efficiency and safety features with a dash of technology. The car now appears to have a sporty look and boasts agile handling.
The mill driving the new C 220 CDI will be an inline 4-cylinder 2143 cc diesel engine with a fuel efficiency of 19.27 km per litre and fuel tank having capacity of 66 litres. This engine has a maximum torque of 400 Nm and can produce 125 kW at 3000-4200 rpm. The car can reach a top speed of 233 kmph with acceleration form 0 to 100 kmph in 7.4 seconds. This motor is paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission for smooth and rapid gear shifts. Moreover a 7G-Tronic Plus transmission will reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The new C 220 CDI comes with a drive mode selector with five select options; Comfort, Economy, Sport, Sport + or Individual. A particular selection changes the engine, transmission and steering characteristics. For an exciting driving experience and to test the car’s performance the driver can select the Sport or the Sport + mode wherein the entire characteristics of the car changes with the use of modified shift points, spontaneous throttle response and direct characteristic steering curve.
Eberhard Kern said in the speech during the launch that “the commencement of the local production of the C 200 Avantgarde petrol within three months of its Indian debut, reiterates our commitment of providing our customers fascinating products which are made in India.” Moreover the Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes- Benz India added that the C 220 CDI would provide an unparalleled luxury with the high quality interiors and clear design and a efficient and high performance engine adds to the overall driving pleasure.
On the outside the car has an emotional sensuous geometry which makes it appear muscular. The front three-dimensional grille and contoured headlamps give the new C-Class a strong character, the Avantgarde has an sports grille with twin louvers which brings out the vehicle’s powerful and dynamic nature. The LED headlamps have a LED intelligent light system which the company claims to be the main feature to the headlamps on these new variants. The tail light cluster features a modern twin-torch-effect with the use of LEDs.
Mercedes has changed the interiors by using unusual styling details like the electrically adjustable “Cobra-look” front seats and are covered in Artico leather, at the back Mercedes has used lightweight material with high-strength steel and has more leg and knee room when compared to the previous models. The center console has a sporty design with a new infotainment system which comprises of Audio 20 CD with touchpad, 3D navigation with connectivity to mobile phones via Bluetooth, the navigation uses Garmin Map Pilot. The infotainment system can be also connected to the internet via Bluetooth or data enabled phones. The ambience of the interiors can be changed according to the user by changing the lighting colour. Other features include Keyless Go starting function, Panoramic Sliding Sunroof, Reverse Camera and a 480 litres of spacious and illuminated boot.
Safety features include ABS, BAS, ESP, ASR, Hill start Assist, Attention Assist when the car detects drowsiness in steering behaviour, belt tensioners and an adaptive High Beam assist plus. The new C 220 CDI Style Diesel will be priced at 39.90 lakhs while the Avantgarde will have a price tag of 42.90 lakhs( ex-showroom Delhi). The locally produced C 200 Avantgarde petrol is priced at 40.90 lakhs and is available for sale in dealerships across the country.
