Yamaha Motor Co, the famous Japanese bike manufacturer, recently announced the new 2015 Yamaha YZF-R3 for the US market. The new Yamaha YZF-R3 will be positioned higher than the R25 in Yamaha’s line up and will be seen locking horns with the bikes likes the Honda CBR300R and the KTM RC390.
Powering the all-new Yamaha YZF-R3 is a liquid cooled 321cc twin cylinder fuel injected DOHC engine that comes mated to a six speed manual gearbox. The new bike’s engine is derived from the R25’s 249cc mill and the increase in the engine’s displacement is due to an increased bore of 68mm. The stroke remains unchanged at 44.1 mm. While the power output of the engine hasn’t been revealed, the manufacturer has informed us that this engine’s maximum power is generated at 10,750 rpm. This engine gets features like off-set cylinders, which has trickled down to bikes like the R1. This engine is cradled in a diamond-type steel frame and the suspension duties come from telescopic forks up front and a mono-shock absorber at the rear. The bike gets 17 inch, 10 spoke alloy wheels that come shod with a 110/70 spec tyre at the front and 140/70 spec tyre at the rear. In the US market, the bike has been priced at USD 4990, with the deliveries of the new bike starting at the beginning of new year.
It isn’t yet for sure if the Yamaha YZF R3 is India bound. So far, rumours have been abounding that the less powerful Yamaha YZF R25, which is already on sale in South East Asia, would be launched in India in the first quarter of next year. It is expected that the Yamaha YZF R25 price in India would be kept around Rs 2.2 lakhs, which means the bike would be locking horns with the likes of the Hyosung GT250R, KTM RC390, KTM 390 Duke and the Hero HX250R in our country. With the introduction of the new YZF R3 however, it would be interesting to see the path Yamaha Motor India Ltd would take to venture into the entry level premium bike segment of our country.
