Fiat India is targetting the Fiat enthusiast and people seeking performance cars through the Abarth range. The Abarth 595 Competizione was the beginning of shift in tactics from Fiat. Now they have targetted the 10-lakh segment which could be far more accessible than the 30 lakh range of Competizione. Fiat India has started taking bookings for 145 bhp Abarth Punto for Rs 50,000; the official car also made its appearance on the company website.
The Abarth Punto was shown at the launch of Abarth 595 Competizione, where we were expecting it to be launched sometime early next year. Luckily, things moved quickly at Fiat and we have the Abarth Punto in just a couple of months time.
Abarth Punto is powered by 1.4 litre T-jet engine producing 145 bhp with the company keeping the torque figures under wraps. Fiat will launch this Made in India car in a month’s time and will be available across 100+ exclusive dealerships pan India, the company said in a press statement.
The new Abarth Punto may come equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, and can accelerate from 0-100km in 10 seconds. The hatchback is expected to be priced between Rs 10-12 lakh. Punto Abarth will see competition in 2016 Ford Figo which will be launched on 23rd September and the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI which will come soon after.
With these hot hatches truly making it to India, it is just about time, the consumers will start shelling out the extra bucks for the fun and excitement these performance driven cars provide. The success or failure of this category could be used as a parameter to gauge the mentality of the new Indian buyer. Success would mean, the consumer is finally ready for performance over mileage.; driving versus commuting.
