Korean car maker Hyundai seems threatened by the sudden rise in the product offerings in the crossover segment and the number of people lining up to buy those. The ix25 is still on track, no doubts there but Hyundai is also preparing to launch the crossover version of the i20 premium hatch.
Our friends over at Motorbash spotted the Hyundai i20 crossover undergoing testing around Chennai. It is the usual affair with the i20 crossover: add bits of plastic cladding, a pair of roof rails and the “Crossover” tag and Voila!! you have a nearly new car which is fairly easy to market and profitable too!
It is interesting to note Hyundai has not taken the usual way like VW did with the Polo or Toyota did with the Etios, but it has taken from what Fiat did to the Avventura and has increased the ground clearance and will offer bigger wheels.
Under the hood we expect no changes. The 1.2 liter Petrol and the 1.4 liter CRDi engine will be carried over from the i20. The petrol engine produces 83 ps of max power at 6,000 rpm and max torque of 11.7 kgm. The CRDi manages max power of 90 ps at 4,000 rpm and 22.4 kgm of max torque. Whether or not Hyundai will offer an automatic gearbox as an option is still unknown.
Hyundai portfolio is already crowded in the sub 8 lakh price range with a different model coming in after a specific interval. You start with the Eon, i10, Grand i10 and the xcent come in before the Elite i20. The i20 crossover will be dearer than the Elite i20 but will not interfere with the ix25 in terms of prices.
