Its literally raining cars this monsoon and another piece of news has hit us that is sure to bring excitement in the minds of average car buyer. If various sources are to be believed, Hyundai are planning on a sub-4 metre SUV to take advantage of Indian governments small car regulations which attract lower taxes.
No details of the upcoming model are available as of now but it is most likely to share platform with the i20 or even the Grand i10. Hyundai off late has been trying to get closer to the number one position held by Maruti Suzuki in the Indian market. They are entering new categories and trying to have at least one product in every class. Now that they have plugged in the gap in the SUV segment with the Creta, the attention seems to be on the sub-4 metre segment. Currently the only compact SUV in the segment is the Ford EcoSport which has seen considerable success.
The upcoming model might be seen with 1.2 liter VTVT engine for the petrol variants and the 1.4 litr;e CRDi diesel engine doing duty on the Elite i20 and i20Active which are in compliance with the small car regulations.
Mr. Dave Zuchowski, CEO of Hyundai Motor America, said in a recent interview that the Creta would not be introduced in the U.S.A. The executive however confirmed that Hyundai is working on a compact SUV with aggressive styling based on a front-wheel drive platform.
Honda Cars India’s assistant vice president for the marketing division, Anita Sharma, said that the company was in an “advanced stage of a study on the compact SUV space”, and that it would take a call post the study’s outcome.
It is well known that Maruti Suzuki has been readying its compact SUV code named YBA for some time now. In all probability it will be called Vitara Breeza and and it has been spotted many times testing with camouflage.
With all major manufacturers in various stages of introducing a compact SUV, this segment is the one to watch out for. Let the battle begin!!
