Jaguar Land Rover’s Urban Driving Concept

As a kid I would pretend to have superman x-ray vision and imagined seeing behind locked doors and taking a look at how many fingers my friend was holding behind his back. This however remained stuff that kids only dream about and adults only wished they hadn’t grown up to know that it can’t be done. But wait!

Jaguar Land Rover has something up its sleeve! It has gone to where no car maker has gone before and tried to re-imagine the entire driving experience, the pain points and the most intuitive ways that we devise for ourselves to overcome them.

It has been quite a while since cars with no A Pillars began to appear on the concept market scene. The general argument being that it enhances driver visibility. That is definitely true, however it also takes away a point of support for the car body and could undermine its architecture. There has to be a valid reason why the idea has not found its way onto the roads yet. The JLR group is looking at the problem of the blind-spot from a very different perspective.

How cool would it be to have transparent portions in the car which would allow the driver to have uncluttered 360 degrees vision? While some would tell you to “rub a lamp”, JLR is ensuring that you get to save one of your three wishes.

Presenting the latest from the JLR stables. Jaguar Land Rover reveals its ‘360 Virtual Urban Windscreen’ research, which uses transparent roof pillars to give the driver a 360 degree view outside the car. Yes you heard that right. Transparent is the word in that line which should lighten you up!

And that’s not all. In practice, in urban driving conditions, most of us would have followed the guy in front of us to help stay focussed on the road. If you don’t have “the guy”, you have a “ghost car” which JLR proposes to project onto the Heads Up Display. This car would be programmed to navigate through the traffic to the desired destination on the map, and you can simply follow “the guy”. Intuitive? Yes. Brilliant? Definitely!

Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology, Jaguar Land Rover, said,” Driving on city streets can be a stressful experience, but imagine being able to drive across town without having to look at road signs, or be distracted trying to locate a parking space as you drive by. We want to present all of this information on a Heads-Up Display in the driver’s eye-line, so the driver doesn’t have to seek it out for themselves and take their eyes off the road ahead.”
