Mahindra is gearing up to meet the much more stringent Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) emission norms, The company will equip both the Scorpio and XUV500 SUVs with a brand new, 2 liter turbodiesel engine that meets BS6 emission norms. These engines will be introduced to both the SUVs before the 1st of April 2020. Mahindra has noted that the new engine will not just meet BS6 emission norms but will also be lighter and more fuel efficient than the present mHawk diesel engine that both SUVs use.
Currently, both the Scorpio and XUV500 are available with the 2.2 liter mHawk turbo diesel engine in all parts of India except the National Capital Region, where they get a slightly smaller 2 liter version of the mHawk engine. While the current 2.2 liter mHawk diesel engine makes maximum outputs of 140 Bhp-330 Nm, it’s expected that the new engine will make more power and torque. Mahindra is likely to offer the new engines on multiple car models and not just on the Scorpio and XUV500. It also means that the company is nearly ready to deploy diesel engines that are BS6 ready.
The new engine is also likely to be offered with front wheel drive, all wheel drive, rear wheel drive and four wheel drive transmission options. Both 6 speed manual and automatic gearboxes are also likely on the new engine. Dr. Pawan Goenka, the managing director of Mahindra & Mahindra, confirmed his company’s readiness to move to BS6 compliant engines with the following statement,
We have to meet BS-VI in all of our products. We have already made a decision on dropping some products when we go to BS-VI, (which are) low volume products. And we have to invest in all the safety regulations that are coming in and therefore there is no letting up of investment in those areas.
