Mahindra is all set to showcase a brand new convertible SUV concept at the 2018 Auto Expo. It’ll be based on the TUV300, but will be much more rounded than the butch looking vehicle compact SUV. Autocar is carrying a render showing what the new convertible SUV will look like.
Unlike the TUV300’s boxy lines, the new convertible SUV concept from Mahindra will be much more rounded in terms of design. It’ll be more like the XUV than the TUV and this is intentional as Mahindra already has the butch looking Thar off roader, which features a removable soft top.
Like the TUV300, the new convertible SUV will measure less than 4 meters in length but will have a body on ladder chassis. Using a body on ladder chassis makes it easy for Mahindra to quickly build a tub/body that can be placed above the chassis. In case of a monocoque car, the cost of doing this is much higher, which is why Mahindra has chosen the TUV instead of say the KUV100 or even the XUV500.
The convertible SUV will be shown as a concept at the Auto Expo, and production plans may be revealed at the event. It’s expected to be more of a show stopper at Mahindra’s pavilion than a vehicle that will immediately go into production. Mahindra showcased the Aero concept during the 2016 Auto Expo, and the production version of the Aero is likely this year.
Similarly, the convertible SUV may also take at least two years to transition from concept to production. It’ll have a ready engine to use: the TUV300’s 1.5 liter, 3 cylinder twin scroll turbocharged diesel engine with 100 PS-240 Nm. A rear wheel drive layout is likely to be standard. Going forward, Mahindra may even add an electric motor to the convertible SUV – something that is perfect for such niche vehicles.
We’ll know more once Mahindra actually unveils this concept at the Auto Expo 2018. Stay tuned to AutoColumn for continuous updates.
