Mahindra will soon launch the 2018 Ssangyong Rexton luxury SUV in India but with Mahindra branding. The automaker could use the XUV700 badge for the premium product. The new SUV will be sold and serviced through Mahindra outlets. The latest G4 Rexton is a South Korean SUV built by Ssangyong, a company that Mahindra now owns.
Mahindra has signed a deal with Ssangyong, which allows the former to import the G4 Rexton as a CKD, and then assemble it at its Chakan factory, and sell it in India. The new SUV will land here before Diwali, and assembly operations will start a few months before that. The XUV700 will challenge the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour.
It’s expected to be priced lower than both the Fortuner and Endeavour as the Mahindra is not premium enough to operate in the 25 lakh+ segments. We expect the XUV700 to be priced between 20-25 lakhs, seriously undercutting the Fortuner and Endeavour. Such pricing will make the new SUV attractive to buyers.
The XUV700 will use a 2.2 liter turbodiesel engine with 178 Bhp and 420 Nm. Globally, this engine gets 6 speed manual, 7 speed automatic, rear wheel drive and four wheel drive options. We’ve to wait and watch for the exact transmission specs of the XUV700 launched in India.
In terms of features, expect the new SUV to feature airbags, ABS, ESP, traction control, a sunroof, a touchscreen infotainment system, rain sensing wipers, automatic headlamps, rear AC vents, arm rests for multiple rows of seats, and also a power adjustable driver’s seat.
The new XUV700 will have big street presence and will be the biggest SUV that Mahindra has sold in the Indian market in terms of size. The vehicle measures a hefty 4.85 meters in length, 1.92 meters in width, 1.8 meters in height, and has a wheelbase of 2.86 meters. Ground clearance measures at over 200 mm.
