Maruti Suzuki has started production of Baleno SHVS. The photo appeared in news is directly from the plant in Manesar. Interestingly, the offerings of SHVS is currently limited to export variants of Baleno that is powered by 1.2-liter dual jet petrol engine of international spec. However, the company will introduce SHVS variant only in diesel variant on Baleno SHVS in coming months.
Indian market will get an SHVS version fitted on diesel engines just like it is currently offered on Ciaz and Ertiga diesel variants. There is a huge demand for SHVS diesel variant in Ciaz as well as Ertiga as both these vehicle get Rs 13000 subsidy from Govt under the mild hybrid category.
What is SHVS in Baleno SHVS?
SHVS stands for Suzuki Vehicle Hybrid system whereas this system is not like you find in Toyota Camry or even Prius. SHVS is equipped with 3 main features, those are power assist, brake energy regeneration, and idle engine start-stop.
this comes from an extra battery in the SHVS equipped car that assists power during acceleration thereby improving engine efficiency and reducing unnecessary fuel loss.
Brake energy Regeneration:
This is the feature of SHVS that stores most of the energy when you apply brakes. The SHVS system also consists of Integrator starter generator which is connected to battery and stores energy in the battery and this stored energy is used in power assist function.
Idle Engine start stop:
This feature saves a lot of fuel when the engine is idling. Most of the cases this gets activated when the car is at a signal and there are few parameters to be satisfied by car to activate this. Such as, the car should be at standstill position, gear should be neutral and foot should not be on the clutch. The engine comes alive as soon as one of the above-mentioned condition gets movement. Imagine if you are on signal and every signal car is getting switched off for at least 30 seconds and you come across such 5 signals. The amount of fuel saved for 150 seconds approx. 2.5 mins each day contributes huge fuel saving in the lifespan of the car. It also helps in reducing carbon footprint.
