The Maruti Suzuki Celerio was the car that has ridden on the success of low cost AMT automatic transmissions that become the trend and came in vogue in the country. Now, Maruti Suzuki is pioneering the safety revolution in cars that India is about to undergo. The company is slowly and steadily making all variants of all models safer as they are now giving an option of buying extra safety features like ABS and airbags. The Celerio is the latest hatch to get these additional options. The new variants will be LXi (O), VXi (O), LDi (O) and the VDi (O).
Maruti Suzuki Celerio is powered by a 1.0 litre engine producing 67 bhp and 90 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and an AMT automatic transmission. The car returns 23.1 kms to a litre of fuel. The CNG variant of same engine is sold by the company and it produces 59 bhp and 78 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The car returns 31.79 kms to a litre of fuel. The new diesel mill is a 2-cylinder 793 cc unit producing 46 bhp and 125 Nm of torque which was devloped in-house by Maruti Suzuki. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The car returns 27.62 kms to a litre of fuel.
The Celerio starts at INR 3.97 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) and goes up to INR 5.78 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The additional safety features might increase the cost by about Rs 25,000- 35,000, but in lieu of the safety it offers, the price is is worth paying for.
