Maruti Suzuki WagonR will get automatic transmission

Maruti Suzuki WagonR will get a mechanical update instead of the usual cosmetic changes and special edition strategies followed during festive season. Maruti Suzuki WagonR will get automatic transmission before Diwali.

Maruti is getting its strategy bang on and is giving customers what they want. The company has been largely responsible to bring automatic transmissions to masses of India. The earlier gearboxes were expensive, but Maruti came up with Continuous Variable Transmission(CVT) to cut costs and it saw instant success. Almost all car companies are either providing CVT or AMT variants if not standard.

The transmission will be sourced from Magneti Marelli, which is a part of the Fiat group. They have a plant in Manesar built specifically to manufacture the transmission and they also provide the transmission to Tata Motors. Dealers will start receiving the cars next month and the car maybe launched during Diwali.

The WagonR hatchback is powered by 1.0 litre, three cylinder K-series petrol engine producing 67 bhp and 90 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and power is sent to the front wheels. It returns 20.5 kms to a litre for fuel. The car gets a 2-DIN music system with USB, AUX, MP3, CD player, AM and FM, front and rear fog lamps, roof rails, body coloured bumpers, mirrors and dorr handles, front and rear power windows, electrically adjustable ORVMs, cup holders, fabric seats, air conditioning with heater, anti glare mirrors, engine immobilizer, child door lock, speed sensing door locks, ABS and dual airbags. It competes against the Datsun Go, Chevrolet Beat, Hyundai i10, Mahindra Verito Vibe

It starts at INR 3.71 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) and goes up to INR 4.69 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The company will aslo introduce a 7-seater MPV based on the WagonR in the coming months.
