Mercedes-Benz India, officially announced that the compact SUV- the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class shall be launched on the 30th of September 2014. The GLA-Class will be available in both petrol and diesel trims namely: the Mercedes-Benz GLA200 CGi and GLA200 CDi. Mercedes-Benz with the GLA-Class is looking to enter into the highly competitive compact SUV segment.
Talking about powertrains, the Mercedes-Benz GLA200 CGi will come with a 1.6 liter, 4-cylinder, turbocharged, direct-injection petrol engine, which will churn out 156 PS of power and 250 Nm torque, by which the GLA200 CGi will be able to clock a 0- 100 km/h in around 8.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 205 km/h. The Mercedes-Benz GLA2oo CDi is powered by a 2.1 liter, 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine, which will produce 136 PS of power and 300 Nm of torque. With a top speed 0f 205 km/h and clocking a 0- 100km/h in 10 seconds, the diesel GLA-Class is only a little slower than the sportier petrol variant. Also, both the GLA-Class engines are mated to a 7G-DCT automatic transmission with a dual clutch setup.
The GLA-Class models are based on the MFA platform (Mercedes Front wheel Architecture) which underpins the current A-Class model. The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class models sport new body cladding, skid plates and roof rails on the exterior, adding an SUV element to the GLA-Class. The interiors are similar to the A-Class with steering mounted paddle-shifters, SLS inspired AC vents and centrally mounted COMAND screen.
The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class models may be priced approximately between 28 lakhs- 32 lakhs (ex showroom). The GLA-Class compact SUV will be up against Audi Q3 and BMW X1 heating up the competition in the luxury compact SUV segment in India.
