The new über luxurious S-Class (W222) from Mercedes will be launched in the Indian market on the 8th of January.
You may ask why not wait for the 2014 Auto Expo, but apparently Mercedes has run out of stocks of the previous model (W221) of the S-Class. And people who buy such cars do not like to be kept waiting.
The car will initially be offered in only one variant, the top of the line S500. It has a twin-turbo 4663cc V8 engine which churns out a total of 453bhp and 71.38kgm of torque. This helps propel the 2 ton car from 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.7 seconds. This new model (W222) has 20 more horses and weighs a little more than its predecessor. The S500 will have Mercedes 7G-tronic seven speed autobox which is renowned for its smoothness.
Mercedes knows what position the S-Class holds in the Indian market and will launch the car only in the long wheelbase form and it will be fully loaded. All the goodies you can possibly imagine are present and then some more. It will have two high resolution TFT screens (31.2 cm) for the new and improved COMAND system, cushioned seats with perforated seats and in-built body massager.
The interior comes fitted with 300 LEDs for the ambient light system which offers you 7 different colors. Other features include a 24-speaker Burmester audio system (a total of 1540 watts!!), Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity.
The company claims that this model is 20% more efficient than its predecessor, thanks to all weight saving techniques used. The car is Euro 6 compliant which speaks about how advanced this car actually is.
The S-Class was always the first to have many features as standard. The Driver monitoring system in an S-Class scans the driver for more parameters than the CT Scan technology used in medicine!! It’s said that the technology used in the S-Class comes to everyday passenger cars in about 10 years and with technologies like Active Body Control, Night Vision System, Magic Body Control (not for India) this one is definitely on the right path.
The car is imported as a CBU and will be priced between INR 1.1 to 1.4 crore. A locally assembled S350 CDI will be offered in the next six months. Watch AutoColumn for an exclusive review soon.
