Maruti Suzuki has started testing the all-new, next-generation WagonR hatchback on Indian roads. The car is expected to be launched next year. It will continue to be an entry-level car for Maruti Suzuki, sitting above the Alto in terms of pricing and positioning.
The test car does not give away much in terms of details. We’ll have to wait for a few more months to see design details of the new WagonR. For now, we can make out that the car continues to have a boxy, tall-boy design. The front and rear overhangs are minimal, and the car is expected to have ample ground clearance.
Engine and transmission details are not known for now. The current WagonR operates with the 1 liter K-Series petrol engine with 67 Bhp and 90 Nm. This engine also gets LPG and CNG as factory fitted options in specific markets. The gearbox is a 5 speed unit with manual and AMT options.
All these specifications could be retained on the new WagonR as well. Maruti may also design the new WagonR platform to be electric-ready, and also to support mild-hybrid and full-hybrid options. The new car is expected to be more robustly built to meet India’s new crash safety norms.
We also anticipate that airbags and ABS will be standard on the new model. It is also expected to get more features on the inside, and better space management. The new WagonR will take on the Hyundai Santro, which will be launched in India by the end of this year. Both cars were archrivals in the early 2000s, and the Santro used to outsell the WagonR initially. In due course of time, Maruti managed to unseat the Santro, which will later discontinued by Hyundai. The rivalry will soon be rekindled. Watch this space for more details.
