Toyota debuted its much loved Fortuner SUV in Australia a couple of months back. It was widely expected that the largest selling SUV in its segment would make its India debut sometime next year. However, according to reports it has been confirmed that it will only come to India by the second half of 2017.
N Raja, Senior Vice President and Director, Sales and Marketing, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private Ltd, confirmed the new Fortuner for India but said, “Very clearly there was a plan of making it in India with localisation, vendor development. We see at least 24 months to 30 months to be a leap time from one market to the other. So that will take it to 2017.”
Toyota Australia has pulled the wraps off its 2016 Fortuner with a with an Australia specific 2.8-liter turbo diesel engine. This particular engine develops 177 PS of power at 3,400 rpm and max torque of 420 Nm from 1,600 rpm. There are two options for the gear box: a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic. The automatic increases the torque to 450 Nm from 1,400 rpm.
The AU model will have 4WD as standard across the range but the user can shift to 2WD configuration to save fuel. The suspension setup is double wishbones at the front and 5-link coil-spring at the rear.
The 2016 Toyota Fortuner stands 1835mm tall while its wheelbase is 2745mm. It is 1855mm wide and 4795mm long and can seat 7 people in comfort. The feature list includes hill-start assist, reversing camera, rear differential lock and 7 airbags for safety. The highest spec model will have bi-LED headlights, LED taillamps and LED DRLs. Some versions might get downhill assist, keyless entry and roof rails.
The Fortuner has had an amazing run in India; selling largely due to its astounding road presence, which is why Toyota does not seem to be in a hurry to launch the update.
