Renault India had put together all the right ingredients for creation of their best ever car in terms of volumes. Renault Kwid bookings crossed the 25,000 mark within the first month of bookings. The French manufacturer priced Kwid unbelievably low at Rs 2.57 lakh rupees with never seen before features in this small car segment.
Sumit Sawhney, MD of Renault India told ET, “We have been able to create a lot of excitement, across demographic and across geographies, it is truly a game changer. Booking number is a true recognition of consumers on Renault brand. Kwid’s fuel economy and low cost of maintenance are being widely cited by prospective buyers in choosing the vehicle.”
According to the report, the Renault Kwid bookings have seen strong numbers in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities and 40% of the buyers are below 28 years of age. Almost 35 percent bookings have come from the tier II and tier III cities such as Nagpur, Rajkot, Nashik, Ludhiana and Jalandhar among other towns. The dealer network has 165 touch points with plans to cross 210 by year end.
The Kwid will come with an 800cc engine to start with and later on 1.0-liter engine with an option of AMT. The 800cc mill will have a power output of about 57bhp which, for a few, might seem less. It must not be forgotten that this is a small car with mileage more of a concern than performance and with a total weight of just 660 kg to move around, it should make for a peppy little engine. The car has been designed in India on the CMF-A platform with 98% localization.
Going by the September sales figures, the top selling car in the country was Maruti Suzuki Alto, which sold 20,658 models. Knowing that the bookings for Kwid started in the last week of August, we can safely assume the Kwid is giving a tough fight to the old horse who has been winning it for years together!! What remains to be seen is would it be a victim of ‘cola fizz effect’ or sustain itself beyond the initial few months.
