Here is the H5X, Tata Motors’ Hyundai Creta challenger. This SUV will be officially revealed tomorrow at the Auto Expo, but then the folks at Motorbeam have managed to get their hands on a picture of the H5X SUV. From the looks of it, the picture looks legit.
As the picture indicates, the H5X will be a sharply styled SUV that builds upon the design that Tata used for the Nexon sub-4 meter SUV. Some Nexon cues on the H5X include the fog lamp housing and the sharply raked window line at the rear. Apart from these cues, the SUV is also expected to feature a floating touchscreen infotainment unit on the dashboard, similar to the one on the Nexon.
While the Nexon gets a 1.5 liter turbo diesel engine, the H5X promises a lot more power and torque with a 2 liter Fiat Multijet diesel engine borrowed from the Jeep Compass. On the H5X, this engine will produce 140 Bhp and 320 Nm, and will be offered with two transmission options: a 6 speed manual and a 9 speed automatic sourced from ZF – the same company who’s famous for making super quick-shifting automatic gearboxes for BMW.
Another important thing to note about the H5X is that it’ll use the Land Rover LS550 platform, which is also used by the Land Rover Discovery Sport luxury SUV. While the base platform will be retained, Tata will re-engineer it to drive down costs as the H5X will be an SUV that will be positioned in the Rs. 10 lakh compact SUV segment. These changes are expected to give the H5X enough refinement while also keeping costs low for mass-market appeal.
The SUV will also be offered with a four wheel drive transfer case, details of which may be revealed tomorrow. Another thing to know about the H5X is that it’s a 5 seater, and that it’ll have a larger sibling. The larger version will seat 7 and is expected to have a longer wheelbase, but will be based on the same platform, and is even expected to share the same mechanicals in a different state of tune.
