The Tata Safari was one of the very first SUV’s of India. It was the fascination of the youth in the 90’s. However, with the introduction of more modern competitors, the SUV lost its spot. However, Tata Motors doesn’t seem to have lost hopes on the Safari brand as it treats the SUV with a facelift every year.

The Tata Safari Storme underwent styling tweaks along with some upgrades in the interior like the upholstery, etc. earlier this year. But, what was more awaited was the more powerful variant, the Varicor 400. The new Tata Safari Storme Varicor 400 was silently launched at a starting price of INR 13.52 lacs.
Technically, only the engine and the gearbox are changed to give out more power. The SUV is now powered by a 2.2-liter, 16-valve, 4-cylinder Varicor engine that produces 156 PS of max power at 4,000 RPM and a peak torque of 400 NM at 1,750-2500 RPM. This motor mated on a new 6-speed manual transmission produces 25% more torque than the regular Safari Storme. The more powerful variant also gets a self-adjustable clutch which makes clutching easier and increases the clutch life.
The new engine and transmission option is only offered in the VX trim with the 4×2 configuration. However, this package can offered to the 4×4 config some time later. The lower trims and the 4×4 variant of the top end will continue to be powered by the 150 PS and 320 NM Varicor engine mated on the 5-speed gearbox. The new Tata Safari Storme Varicor 400 incurs an extra cost of Rs. 40,000 over the VX 4×2 trim. But, it is a full value for money offer.
The extra torque will help in improved off-roading. It also helped the car to do 0-100 km/hr in 12.8 seconds which is a whole 1 second faster than the existing version. The 0-60 km/hr is done in 5.2 seconds which is also 0.5 seconds faster than the Varicor 320.
Other features are to remain the same as on the VX trim. The bookings have already begun. Tata Motors hope to earn back the prestige of the Safari with the launch of this more powerful Safari.
