Tata Motors revealed the Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP high performance cars at the 2018 Auto Expo. Both cars will soon be launched in the Indian market as affordable cars for driving enthusiasts. JTP stands for Jayem Tata Performance, a new badge that Tata Motors will introduce to sell fun to drive cars and SUVs. The Tiago and Tigor JTP have been developed by Tata Motors with heavy inputs from Jayem Automotive, an engineering company based in Coimbatore, which also builds race cars. Both cars get more powerful turbocharged petrol engines.
In fact, the Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP use the 1.2 liter Revotron turbocharged petrol engine from the Nexon, but in a slightly lower state of tune. While this engine produces 108 Bhp and 170 Nm on the Nexon, it’s tuned to output 108 Bhp and 150 Nm on the JTP twins. The engine also gets a 5 speed manual gearbox, instead of the 6 speed unit that the Nexon gets. However, gear ratios have been modified for better acceleration. The JTP cars also get stiffer suspension set-up for better road handling. The cars have also been lowered for better handling.
Both cars feature a range of exterior modifications for differentiation from the regular Tiago and Tigor models. The front ends of both cars receive an aggressive bumper, honeycomb grille at the top and bottom, a red JTP logo, smoked projector headlamps and hood vents.
Other changes include 15 inch alloy wheels with a diamond cut, gloss black fender vents with a honeycomb design, red wing mirrors, side skirts, a gloss black hatch/boot lid garnish and chromed dual exhaust tips. The roof also gets a contrast black finish.
While Tata is yet to announce pricing for these cars, we expect it to be very competitive. The Tiago JTP is likely to start from under Rs. 6 lakhs while the Tigor JTP could sit under the Rs. 7 lakhs mark. At these prices, these cars will be lowest priced 100+ Bhp cars sold in India, bringing back memories of the Fiat Palio 1.6. Both cars will be launched in the coming months.
