The newly launched Tata Motors compact sedan the Tata Zest received an astounding 10,000 bookings in the past two months, which shows that this time around Tata Motors may look to regain its share in the Indian car market.
Tweeting on the issue, Mr. Ranjit Yadav, President of Passenger Vehicle Business Unit tweeted ” Delighted that the Tata Zest already has an order pipeline of 10k+ for next 2 months”. The Zest is so heavily booked that the Zest variants are now on 4- 6 weeks waiting period, except the Tata Zest diesel AMT variant- being the cheapest automatic diesel sedan in the market has a waiting period between 3- 4 months.
The Tata Zest is powered by a new 1.2 liter, turbocharged Revotron petrol engine, which produces 88.7 BHP, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and comes with three driving modes- Eco, City and Sport. The Zest also gets the 1.3 liter, Fiat-sourced Quadrajet diesel engine, which comes in two states of tune- a 74 BHP and 89 BHP. Apart from the 5-peed gearbox, the diesel variant also comes with an option of an automated manual transmission (AMT). Packed with up-market gizmo features as well, the bookings and the waiting period of the Tata Zest is bound to increase in the coming months.
Even thought 10,000 bookings were recorded for the Tata Zest, the company’s wholesale numbers of vehicles sold dropped by 5% to 10,975 units as compared to 11,564 in August 2013. Comparing the sales only for the month of August, the company sold 8,229 vehicles in 2014, which is 6% less than the 8,761 vehicles sold in August 2013.
But with the new Tata Zest, which is aggressively priced between 4.64 lakhs- 6.99 lakhs (ex showroom Delhi), Tata Motors hopes to revise its sales charts in the coming fiscal and achieve a good chunk of the shares in the Indian car market. The Zest will face stiff competition from the Swift DZire, Honda Amaze and Hyundai Xcent, but we hope it stands tall in the newly formed compact sedan segment. To further strengthen the company’s position in the Indian car market, Tata motors plans to launch the Tata Bolt in the coming months.
