In the recent months, The Indian automotive scene has seen a radical transformation in terms of performance and drivability especially in hatchbacks. Not that there weren’t great cars in last 20 years, But of late the tarmacs in India have been under tremendous pressure. It’s just getting too hot to handle. 1 . Fiat Abarth 595 Competizione
This can safely be called the hottest hatch of the whole lot. Insanely priced at 29.85 lakhs (Ex-Showroom Delhi), This is basically a 3 door hatch (Door & Boot). This monster houses a petrol 1.4 litre Turbocharged T-Jet engine and a heart thumping 160 angry horses @5000rpm and 230nm of torque @3000rpm under that metal hood. The engine is coupled to a 5 speed AT Transmission with paddle shifts readily available. The suspension setup is just amazing in this car. Of course it has to be. Copaf front suspensions with FSD (Frequency Selective Damping) technology Koni rear suspensions with FSD (Frequency Selective Damping) technology. Although very impractical for us Indians in terms of the cost, This car is something which every die-hard enthusiast must have in their garage.
2. Fiat Abarth Punto 1.4 T-jet
Next on the list is the Abarth Punto. Priced at 10.23 lakhs (Ex-Showroom Delhi) and not as expensive as the Abarth 595, This is much more affordable and will definitely put a big grin on any enthusiast’s face. It comes with the same 1.4 litre T-jet engine as the Abarth 595 but albeit slightly detuned at 145 bhp @ 5500rpm and 212nm @2000rpm. A true driver’s delight because it has manual transmission. And Fiat’s rock solid stability is something to be taken into serious consideration because of the amount of power this car generates and all the components have to withstand the pressure.
3. Volkswagen GT TSI/TDI
The Volkswagen GT comes in both petrol and diesel version. The choice is not limited here and customers can definitely pickup their favorite poison. The Petrol engine has a 1.2 litre Turbocharged engine churning out 103 bhp @ 5000rpm and 175 Nm @ 1500 rpm. The diesel engine comes with a 1.5 litre engine putting out 103bhp @4400rpm and 250nm @1500rpm. The transmission is also different In both the cars. The petrol version has a 7 Speed DSG AT coupled to the engine and the diesel version has the conventional 5 speed manual transmission. It is priced at 8.98 lakhs and 9.09 lakhs (Ex-Showroom Delhi) for the petrol & diesel version respectively.
4. Ford Figo Titanium Plus 1.5 TDCi
The Ford figo since the time of it’s launch hasn’t been particularly termed as a hot hatch, But right now we’re talking about it’s newest iteration. This car has been given a new lease of life by plonking a 1.5 litre engine which puts out 110bhp @ 6300 rpm and 136nm of torque @ 4250rpm. Lowest torque figure of the whole lot, But still can give other rivals a little bit of competition. Comes with the conventional 5 speed manual transmission. Priced at 7.61 (Ex-showroom Delhi).
5. Honda Jazz
The last but not the least. The previous generation Jazz was a big market dud due to it’s improper price placement in the segment also it was limited because petrol only option. Although it find takers and the car was a hoot to drive, It did not find many takers. Now the newest iteration of the Honda Jazz promises much more. Priced at 8.99 lakhs (Ex-Showroom Delhi) It comes with a 1.5 litre engine which puts out 98bhp @3600 rpm and torque of 200nm @1750 rpm. This comes mated to a manual 6 speed transmission. BHP is a little less compared to the competition but still manages with the torque ; Diesel engines thrives on torque.
