Toyota Kirloskar Motors Limited has just put out a teaser of the Yaris Ativ sedan, a car that will be showcased at the 2018 Indian Auto Expo. It will be launched in India later this year, before Diwali. The Yaris Ativ is basically a rebadged Vios sedan, which will be Toyota’s C-Segment offering in the Indian market. The car will challenge the Honda City, Maruti Ciaz and Hyundai Verna. However, it is slightly smaller than the Ciaz and City in terms of dimensions. This may prompt Toyota to price the car more competitively to make up for the slightly shorter length.
While the car is currently on sale in international markets such as Thailand and Malaysia, it is offered with a 1.5 liter petrol engine that outputs 105 Bhp-140 Nm. 5 speed manual and CVT automatic gearbox options are offered with this engine. For the Indian market, Toyota is expected to make a major change by adding a diesel engine.
The 1.4 liter diesel engine from the Corolla Altis, which features a variable geometry turbocharger, will be picked to do this job. This engine is expected to retain its 89 Bhp-205 Nm power and torque outputs. A 6 speed manual gearbox is expected to be offered on the diesel.
In terms of dimensions, the Yaris Ativ measures 4,425 mm in length, 1,730 mm in width, 1,475 mm in height and 2,550 mm in wheelbase. One key thing Toyota will have to definitely fix for the Indian market is the ground clearance, which is just 133 mm on the Thai-spec model. Thailand has much better roads compared to India, which means that Toyota will have to increase the ground clearance by at least 10-15 mm to make sure that the Yaris Ativ doesn’t scrape every other speed breaker here. The car is expected to be priced between Rs. 7-8 lakhs for the base model. ABS and airbags are likely to be standard across variants.
